Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide.
For this reason, the Portuguese Cardiology Foundation defined the month of May as the "Month of the Heart". This campaign seeks to make people aware of the seriousness of this problem, encouraging the population to adopt healthy lifestyles, such as exercising and adopting a more balanced diet.
And how can the consumption of microalgae, combined with a healthy lifestyle, help in the prevention of heart disease?
Fish are considered a source of omega-3 and, in fact, this nutrient is obtained by eating algae, as it is the main food of these animals. A recent study compared seaweed oil to a portion of cooked salmon and found that each one has practically the same percentage of omega-3, a fatty acid that is essential for the proper functioning of the heart and that aids in reducing blood pressure.
Within the group of algae, microalgae stand out. Chlorella, being rich in vitamin B12 and iron, promotes the production of red blood cells, thus protecting cardiovascular health. And spirulina can also play an important role in the prevention of heart disease, due to its LDL cholesterol (also known as "bad cholesterol") reducing effects, achieved through its fatty acids, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
